A Day At Boyce Thompson Arboretum

Boyce Thompson Arboretum in bloom Actually, several different days. Each of these galleries contain pictures taken on just single day outings at Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park (BTA) located in Arizona near the town of Superior. From my home in North Scottsdale, it is a rather long one hour and twenty minute drive to get there, but it's always worthwhile, as you'll see from these photographs. During the peak season from August to early October, capturing pictures is almost like being in a butterfly pavilion.

It is open year round, but the hours vary so check their website if you're planning on going. The admission price is currently $15.

I John Matthewsstarted this in September of 2006 when I received an email from John Matthews (a butterfly video photographer and at that time a complete stranger) who had found my butterfly pages. In that email he said there were "a lot of butterflies there right now." I had no idea what he meant by "a lot" but you can see from that first gallery it was practically an understatement! John became an instant friend and we would meet up at Boyce Thompson, the Desert Botanical Garden, and at the Central Arizona Butterfly Association meetings and outings.

BTA Butterflies & Bugs - Sept. 22, 2006

It's still very hot in September so why would I drive all the way to BTA?  On this particular day I went there because a complete stranger, John Matthews, wrote me an email introducing himself saying their were "a lot" of butterflies.
